There are a lot of diet plans out there, but the consistent throughline with all of them is the importance of consistency. No diet will guarantee results overnight, and much like how everyone taking them has particular needs, the right diet plan will depend on their body, their lifestyle and their goals.

This is particularly true with meal replacement shakes, a popular way to lose weight for decades and one that is effective for some at creating and maintaining weight loss, but it is not a universal solution, and it requires some changes to your lifestyle for it to be at its most effective.

When you need a diet that is effective, simple to follow and fits into a busy routine, meal replacements are a great option, but some people seem to get more benefits from them than others.

Why is this the case? In most cases, it is the result of inadvertently making mistakes with preparing the meal replacement, how you drink them and how you fit them into your existing lifestyle.

Here are the most common, and the best ways to avoid them, to get the best results.

Can You Entirely Replace Your Diet With Meal Replacement Shakes?

Despite the term meal replacement, you cannot replace every meal you have with shakes, as it can lead to the same health risks as a crash diet.

Meal replacements are designed to replace one or at most two meals in a day with a low-calorie shake high in protein and fibre that helps to keep you full in time for a nutritious, filling evening meal.

That provides a balanced, calorie-controlled diet that is easier to follow than meal planning for multiple meals a day, but this balance can be upset by relying exclusively on one source of nutrition.

Make sure that you have at least one substantial, nutritionally balanced and healthy meal per day, as this will maximise the benefits of the meal replacement shake you have to replace breakfast or lunch.

The only exception to this is if you are advised by a medical professional to replace all meals with meal replacements, such as if you are prescribed a liquid diet before surgery or other medical procedures.

Are Meal Replacement Shakes A Quick Fix Solution?

Whilst meal replacements are effective as part of a balanced diet and exercise plan, they are not a solitary solution, nor are they a quick fix that can be used to rapidly lose weight before reverting back to old habits.

This is the case with any major weight management interventions, such as GLP-1 injections or calorie-restricted diets. They can work without adjusting your lifestyle significantly, but the weight will return quickly if they are not part of a long-term plan to take advantage of your weight loss to boost your health and fitness routine.

Instead, work with experts to determine how long you should drink them and plan for how you will adapt your diet once you come off of them.

As with any other diet, the most important step isn’t losing weight, but making the transition from a diet to a long-term lifestyle, which usually involves gradually using fewer meal replacements as you get closer to your goal.

Do You Need To Drink More Water With Meal Replacement Shakes?

In practice, you should drink more water, or specifically, you should not count the meal replacement itself as part of your water intake.

Whilst the advice to drink eight glasses of water per day remains the standard, meal replacements, unlike tea, coffee and sugar-free drinks, do not count towards this daily target.

This means that when you drink a shake, make sure to have a glass of water with you as well to wash it down and ensure you’re keeping yourself hydrated.

As well as this, keep a bottle of water with you when you exercise to keep yourself hydrated when you work out; do not rely on your meal replacement for this.

Do You Need To Exercise When On A Meal Replacement Diet?

As with GLP-1 injections and any other diet, exercise is a critical component for maximising the weight loss effects of your diet, building muscle, burning calories and maintaining your body.

Combining exercise with meal replacements provides the most effective and powerful results, which creates a virtuous cycle where you feel fitter and ready to exercise more, helping you to lose more weight and keep it off following the diet.

Start off small, gradual and consistent before ramping up your exercise routine.
